Bitcoin whales shift to exchange withdrawals amid rising profits

Recent on-chain data indicates a shift in Bitcoin whale behavior, with large holders moving from depositing assets into exchanges to withdrawing them. This trend, which began around late August, suggests a reduction in potential sell-pressure during periods of price volatility. As Bitcoin trades near $86,200, whales are once again in a profitable position, having established cost bases significantly lower than current market prices.

A working paper from the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia highlights how these large-scale movements influence smaller market participants. The study found that small and medium Bitcoin wallets significantly increase trading activity within 15 minutes of large transfers being flagged by services like Whale Alert. Specifically, buy participation among small wallets rose by approximately 14.81 to 23.72 percentage points following whale buy signals, while sell participation increased by 12.95 to 29.52 percentage points after sell alerts.

In contrast to the reaction seen in the Bitcoin market, Ethereum traders appeared to largely ignore whale transactions, showing little to no measurable response to large transfers of ETH or Wrapped Bitcoin.
