Bitcoin whale transaction and trading behavior

Overview

Research from the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia has identified specific trading patterns in response to ‘whale alerts’, which are public notifications of large cryptocurrency transfers.

The study indicates that Bitcoin traders exhibit significant same-direction activity within 15 minutes of an alert. For example, following whale buys, buy participation increased by 14.81 to 23.72 percentage points for small and medium wallets, respectively. Following whale sells, sell participation rose by 12.95 to 29.52 percentage points for those same wallet groups. This activity typically stabilizes within an hour. In contrast, Ethereum traders showed comparatively stable participation, largely ignoring these large transfers.

More recent on-chain data shows a shift in Bitcoin whale behavior starting in late August, with large holders moving from depositing assets into exchanges to withdrawing them. This trend suggests a reduction in potential sell-pressure as Bitcoin trades near $86,200 and whales maintain profitable positions.
