The Spanish payment platform Bizum has launched Bizum Pay, a digital wallet designed to allow users to make in-person payments at physical stores by tapping their mobile phones on payment terminals. The system facilitates immediate account-to-account transfers, aiming to reduce reliance on international card networks and lower transaction commissions for merchants.

The rollout is being implemented progressively. In the initial phase, the service is available to customers of CaixaBank, Banco Sabadell, and Bankinter, with other banking entities expected to join in the coming months. While Bizum reports that over 1.6 million terminals—representing more than 85% of the banking terminal network—are compatible, actual adoption in retail stores remains uneven.

Reports indicate that many large retailers and supermarkets in cities like Madrid have not yet enabled the service or have no scheduled implementation date. Despite this uneven deployment, the platform currently serves over 31 million users for peer-to-peer transfers.
