Bizum Pay rollout and adoption in Spanish retail
Overview
The Spanish payment platform Bizum has launched Bizum Pay, a digital wallet designed for in-person mobile payments at physical stores. By facilitating immediate account-to-account transfers, the service aims to reduce merchant reliance on international card networks like Visa or Mastercard, potentially lowering transaction commissions.
While the rollout is being implemented progressively through banks such as CaixaBank, Banco Sabadell, and Bankinter, initial adoption remains uneven. Although Bizum reports that over 1.6 million terminals—representing more than 85% of the banking terminal network—are compatible, many large retailers and supermarkets, particularly in cities like Madrid, have not yet enabled the service or have no scheduled implementation date.
In Catalonia, despite technical readiness from major banks including BBVA, CaixaBank, and Banco Sabadell, merchants report minimal consumer demand. Some retailers have opted to delay full integration until after the summer holiday season due to a current lack of interest from customers.
As of mid-September 2026, Bizum maintains a strong presence with over 31.5 million active users and has expanded its cross-border capabilities to include Portugal and Italy. CaixaBank currently holds a 30% market share of Bizum, managing over a million daily operations. However, the Spanish National Police have issued warnings regarding new scams targeting the system.
Beyond its financial utility, the platform has seen unique social behaviors; some users have utilized the payment concept field to send romantic messages, though this has faced criticism on social media regarding its potential use for harassment to bypass digital blocks.
