Bizum Pay reaches 75% of Spanish POS terminals amid merchant uncertainty

Bizum Pay has expanded rapidly across Spain's payment infrastructure, with the company reporting that 75% of point-of-sale (POS) terminals in the country are now capable of accepting the service.

However, there is a distinction between technical readiness and actual commercial adoption. While the infrastructure is widely available, many small businesses have not yet activated the service. Uncertainty remains among local merchants regarding how the system functions through card terminals, its tax implications with the Spanish Tax Agency (Hacienda), and whether there are specific incentives for implementation.

Due to the decentralized nature of activation—which requires merchants to request the service through their respective financial institutions—there is currently no public data tracking the exact number of businesses actively offering Bizum Pay to customers. The Spanish Confederation of Commerce (CEC) noted that it does not currently have specific data on the system's implementation or widespread concerns from its associations.
