Bizum Pay implementation in Spain
Overview
Bizum Pay has seen rapid expansion across Spain’s payment infrastructure, with 75% of point-of-sale (POS) terminals now technically capable of accepting the service. Despite this widespread technical readiness, commercial adoption remains uneven. Many small businesses have yet to activate the service due to uncertainties regarding its operation through card terminals and potential tax implications with the Spanish Tax Agency (Hacienda).
As the service moves toward broader implementation, major retailers are transitioning from testing to active deployment. Mercadona, Spain’s highest-revenue supermarket chain, has moved beyond initial testing in locations such as Soria to expand the service. Other major retailers, including Carrefour and Eroski, are also adopting the technology. Eroski has begun deploying Bizum Pay in its Caprabo supermarkets in Catalonia, with plans for a progressive rollout across the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. This rollout is contingent on the availability of the service through various banking institutions. Currently, Eroski’s implementation is limited to its food business and does not yet include its gas stations or Forum Sport stores. This expansion is part of a broader digital transformation strategy, following significant investments in innovation and technological development.
Further integration is being driven by banking institutions, such as Cajamar, which has integrated Bizum Pay into its digital offerings. This digital wallet allows customers to make in-person payments by bringing their mobile phones near a payment terminal, enabling rapid transactions without entering card details. This development supports merchant digitalization by providing immediate or aggregated settlement.
