India: BJP and INDIA bloc clash over electoral roll controversy

Political tensions in India have escalated as the opposition INDIA bloc intensifies protests against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The opposition alleges that the revision process has improperly deleted approximately 13 crore names, representing about 14 per cent of the previous total. In response, the INDIA bloc conducted a symbolic “public impeachment” of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in New Delhi, with Rahul Gandhi demanding the official face trial for treason.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has challenged Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav to debate the allegations in a special session of Parliament, asserting that the BJP has nothing to hide. Shah accused the opposition of preferring street protests over parliamentary discussion and likened their claims to a losing team blaming the umpire.

BJP leaders have criticized the opposition’s planned “Chalo Dilli” march and rally at Ramlila Maidan, questioning the feasibility of the claimed 10 lakh attendee turnout and warning of potential disruptions to Delhi’s wholesale traders during the festive season. Meanwhile, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju challenged the Congress party to explain its past electoral performances and the necessity of removing names of deceased or duplicate voters from the rolls.
