Indian political dispute over electoral roll revision
Overview
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and opposition parties, including the Congress and the INDIA bloc, remain in a dispute regarding the Election Commission of India’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The opposition alleges that the SIR process has improperly purged approximately 13 crore names, representing about 14 per cent of the previous total.
During a symbolic “public impeachment” of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at the residence of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, opposition leaders accused the CEC of participating in a conspiracy to manipulate elections. The proceeding, presided over by former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, included allegations from Rahul Gandhi that the ruling BJP is compromising election fairness. Mahua Moitra, a Trinamool Congress MP, further claimed that 71% of deleted voters in West Bengal were Muslims and 51% were women.
In response to the revision, the INDIA bloc planned a “Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao” mega rally at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi for November 1, demanding the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar and a return to ballot paper voting. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has challenged opposition leaders to a special session of Parliament to debate allegations of “vote chori” or electoral theft, asserting that the ruling party has nothing to hide. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra dismissed the impeachment event as “political theatre.” To manage the planned demonstrations, authorities have deployed significant security personnel, drones, and CCTV cameras across central Delhi.
