The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially approved Debasish Sharma as its candidate for the upcoming 2026 Lok Sabha by-election in the Nagaon constituency of Assam. Sharma is a former administrative officer and former Nagaon District Commissioner.

The Election Commission of India has scheduled the by-election for October 6, 2026, with the counting of votes set to take place on October 9, 2026.

In preparation for the poll, the Assam State BJP is holding an extended executive meeting in Guwahati to discuss election strategies and the Seva Sankalp campaign, which is scheduled to run from September 17 to October 17. Recent party developments in the region also include the formal induction of former administrative officer Debashis Sarma and journalists Lenin Saurav Bora and Gunjan Kalita into the BJP.
