Overview

The upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election in Assam has drawn scrutiny regarding the candidacy of former administrative official Debasish Sharma.

Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain has called on the Election Commission of India (ECI) to conduct an independent inquiry into Sharma’s conduct during his tenure as Nagaon District Commissioner. Hussain, noting that Sharma previously served as the District Election Officer with responsibilities over EVM management and polling arrangements, raised concerns regarding the ‘purity, neutrality and credibility’ of the electoral process. Hussain requested the appointment of an independent senior Election Officer to supervise the upcoming arrangements.

Following these developments, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) officially named Sharma as its candidate for the by-election. The ECI has scheduled the election for October 6, 2026, with vote counting set for October 9, 2026. In preparation, the Assam State BJP is organizing strategy meetings and the Seva Sankalp campaign.
