Black flies and midge swarms reported in Hungary

Small biting insects, specifically black flies (Simuliidae), are causing significant discomfort due to their painful biting mechanism. Unlike mosquitoes that suck blood, black flies use sharp mouthparts to lacerate the skin, which can lead to intense swelling, burning pain, and prolonged itching. These insects are most active during early morning and late afternoon, often attracted to dark clothing, heat, and carbon dioxide.

In the Lake Balaton region, experts from the Balaton Limnological Research Institute (BLKI) warn of upcoming swarms of non-biting midges (Chironomidae). Due to prolonged heat and high nutrient levels in the lake sediment, algae growth has increased, providing abundant food for midge larvae. While these midges do not bite, they are expected to form massive, disruptive swarms around the shoreline between mid-August and mid-September. The development of larvae is currently more advanced in the western basin of the lake compared to the central and eastern areas.
