In the Lake Balaton region, the Balaton Limnological Research Institute (BLKI) has issued warnings regarding upcoming swarms of non-biting midges (Chironomidae). Experts attribute the potential for massive swarms between mid-August and mid-September to increased algae growth caused by prolonged heat and high nutrient levels in lake sediment. Larval development is currently noted to be more advanced in the western basin of the lake than in the central or eastern areas.
