Black Sea commercial shipping faces record attacks amid Russia-Ukraine war
More than 35 commercial vessels were struck in the Black Sea during July 2026, with up to 23 sailors killed. The month saw at least 24 confirmed hits on commercial ships, the highest monthly total since Russia's full‑scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
From 1 to 6 August 2026, reliable reports indicated at least four additional incidents: two container ships, one ro‑ro/general cargo vessel and one tanker were hit. Unconfirmed information suggests up to seven further vessels may have been damaged in the same period, including two bulk carriers and three tankers. The Turkish sailors' union Deniz İşçileri estimates that more than 35 commercial ships have been struck overall.
Manolis Lazaridis, head of the shipping‑security firm Diaplous, said the sector is in a "continuous war" and that any vessel operating on the Russian or Ukrainian side can become a target. The Black Sea has thus become the most hazardous maritime zone for global commercial shipping, as attacks expand beyond ports and vessels directly linked to the warring parties.
