Ukraine-Russia War: AI Drones, Economic Strikes, and Escalat

Overview

The conflict has evolved into a high-intensity war of attrition characterized by autonomous AI weaponry, deep-strike drone campaigns, and severe economic disruption. Warfare has entered a new technological phase with the reported deployment of Russian ‘Molnija’ drones using Nvidia Jetson Orin microcomputers for autonomous target selection. In response, Ukraine has utilized weather balloons as ‘drone taxis’ to transport unmanned systems over long distances.

Economic warfare has intensified through targeted strikes on Russian e-commerce and logistics. A massive fire destroyed a 100,000-square-meter Wildberries warehouse in the Tambov region, with inventory losses estimated between 147 and 223 billion rubles. Ozon facilities in Ufa and Orenburg have also been hit, part of a campaign Kyiv claims targets companies supplying the Russian military.

Energy infrastructure remains a primary target. Major Russian refineries, including Lukoil’s NORSI, Perm, and Volgograd facilities, have faced significant disruptions or total shutdowns. To mitigate fuel shortages, Russia has increased petrol imports from India and is receiving diesel and gasoline assistance from Kazakhstan. Conversely, Russia has launched a campaign against Ukrainian fuel infrastructure, striking 246 gas stations since April, causing significant logistical gaps in regions like Kherson.

Maritime security in the Black Sea has deteriorated. Russian attacks on the Izmail port and a suspected Ukrainian drone strike on the Turkish vessel Lider Bordo Mavi have heightened risks. These hostilities have disrupted maritime trade, causing a near standstill in Turkish exports and forcing cargo ships to alter routes to avoid danger zones.
