Ukraine drone strikes deepen Russian fuel crisis

Overview

Ukraine’s intensive long‑range drone campaign continues to cripple Russia’s fuel system. After a wave of strikes on refineries in Krasnodar, Taganrog, Samara and other regions, attacks have now hit the Syzran refinery in Samara, killing one civilian and damaging diesel output, and caused fresh damage to fuel depots in Crimea, deepening shortages on the occupied peninsula. Drone raids on the Moscow‑region settlement of Pionersky and elsewhere killed three people and ignited fires at an oil depot, underscoring the expanding geographic reach of the campaign.

The cumulative pressure forced Russia to impose a temporary diesel‑export ban, pushing global diesel prices higher and prompting long queues and occasional brawls at Russian stations. Despite the export drop, India’s record June imports of Russian crude softened the overall revenue loss.

Kyiv’s political response has accelerated. President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko and, after a brief cabinet reshuffle, nominated Naftogaz chief Serhiy Koretsky (later spelled Serhiy Korecki) as the new prime minister. Parallel moves include a diplomatic‑team reshuffle aimed at speeding Patriot air‑defence deliveries and reinforcing Ukraine’s foreign‑policy coordination.

Russia has warned of “several times more powerful” retaliation to the drone assaults, while NATO analysts note that the sustained attacks are reshaping European energy security and prompting discussions on autonomous defence capabilities. The war’s economic and political repercussions remain intertwined with the unfolding fuel‑crisis narrative.
