Black Sea conflict escalates as Russia strikes cargo ships and ports
Escalating conflict in the Black Sea has seen Russian forces strike multiple maritime and land targets. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, strikes hit two cargo ships and fuel storage facilities in Chornomorsk, which Moscow claims were being used for military purposes. Odesa Governor Oleh Kipel reported that massive air strikes also hit industrial and port infrastructure in the region.
In response to attacks on Bulgarian cargo ships, including one that sank, President Volodymyr Zelensky denied any Ukrainian involvement in the incidents. He stated that the Ukrainian Navy confirmed the attacks were a combined Russian operation utilizing both maritime and aerial drones. Zelensky characterized the actions as an attempt by Russia to make the maritime route unsafe for navigation.
Additionally, a Russian airstrike in Kharkiv resulted in one death and six injuries. The intensification of strikes on energy and transport infrastructure follows a pattern of increased military tension between the two nations.
