Black Sea drone attacks disrupt maritime trade and Turkish exports

Increased drone attacks in the Black Sea resulting from the Russia-Ukraine war are disrupting maritime trade and causing significant security concerns for commercial vessels. Due to risks in the eastern and northern sectors of the sea, many cargo ships have altered their routes or are waiting in safer waters, including off the coast of Trabzon, Turkey.

Erkut Çelebi, Chairman of the Trabzon Chamber of Commerce and Industry (TTSO), reported that vessels belonging to local import and export firms have been targeted by drone strikes, leading to a near standstill in exports. The delays pose a high risk of spoilage for perishable goods such as fresh vegetables and citrus fruits currently held at ports.

Selçuk İskender, Chairman of the Eastern Black Sea Exporters Association (DKİB), noted that the uncertainty regarding waiting vessels is disrupting planning and creating financial burdens for exporters. Local business leaders are calling for government intervention, including financial support, deferred payments, and the application of force majeure to protect producers and exporters from mounting losses.
