Black Sea maritime tensions rise after failed ceasefire proposal and tanker attack
Tensions in the Black Sea have escalated following a failed Ukrainian proposal for a mutual ceasefire regarding civilian shipping. Ukraine reportedly sought a third-party mediated agreement to halt attacks on non-military vessels to secure agricultural export corridors, particularly from the Odesa region. Russia rejected the proposal, characterizing it as a “half-measure.”
Simultaneously, the maritime security situation worsened after the Greek oil tanker Skiros, carrying Russian crude oil, was attacked near the Caspian Pipeline Consortium terminal by Novorossiysk. While the Suezmax-class vessel suffered no crew casualties or oil spills, the incident marks an end to a recent period of relative calm in the area. This follows a prior commitment by Ukraine to avoid attacking non-Russian vessels unless they carry Russian cargo.
In addition to maritime developments, the conflict continues to impact land territories, with drone strikes reported in Zaporizhzhia and a massive aerial attack targeting Moscow, where air defense systems intercepted at least 23 drones.
