Black Sea shipping disrupted by Russian attacks on civilian vessels
Russian attacks on Ukrainian port infrastructure and civilian merchant ships in the Black Sea are disrupting vital trade routes. According to Dmytro Pletenchuk, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Navy, Russian tactics have evolved from targeting port facilities to conducting specific drone attacks on civilian freighters, which has occasionally brought shipping in the Gulf of Odessa to a near standstill.
Dmytro Barinov, President of the Ukrainian Port Association Ukrport, warned that these attacks create global consequences similar to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, leading to increased risks, higher transport costs, and rising prices. These disruptions threaten global supply chains and food security in North Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia.
Kostiantyn Tymoshenko, General Manager of Formag Group Ltd, noted that alternative logistics routes via the Danube, rail, and road are insufficient to replace the capacity of major Black Sea ports. He highlighted the scale of the issue by stating that a single 5,000-ton cargo ship would require more than 200 trucks to move an equivalent load, a task further complicated by a shortage of drivers willing to risk travel to the port regions.
