Black Sea attacks threaten global grain supplies and wheat prices
Escalating attacks on ships, ports, and terminals in the Black Sea are threatening global food security by disrupting grain exports from Russia and Ukraine. These two nations collectively account for approximately 30% of the global wheat market. Recent hostilities have caused wheat futures in Chicago to approach three-year highs.
In Ukraine, shipments through Odesa-region ports have seen drastic declines, with some reports indicating weekly grain exports fell by over 90% since early July. This disruption has led to a buildup of unsold crops, creating storage capacity risks and forcing local prices down to one-third of global levels. The Ukrainian Central Bank estimates potential losses could reach $2.5 billion this year.
The USDA has adjusted its outlook, lowering Russia's wheat export forecast by 1.5 million tons to 46 million tons and Ukraine's by 1 million tons to 13.5 million tons. To fill this gap, export forecasts for Canada and Kazakhstan have been increased by 1 million tons each.
Global importers, including Egypt and Indonesia, are preparing for tighter supplies. While Egypt relies heavily on Black Sea wheat, Indonesia is exploring alternatives from Australia, Argentina, and Romania. Analysts warn that disruptions in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov could affect up to 86 million tons of exports this year, representing 17% of global grain trade.
