Black women leaders launch political manifesto for Brazil's 2026 elections
In Brasília, the Articulação de Mulheres Negras Brasileiras (AMNB) launched the ‘Manifesto Político das Mulheres Negras do Brasil: O Pacto do Bem Viver e as Eleições 2026’. The document advocates for a political system centered on equity, justice, and dignity, seeking to place Black women at the core of decision-making processes as leaders, candidates, and managers.
Data from the Tribunal Superior Eleitoral (TSE) and studies by the Instituto de Estudos Socioeconômicos (Inesc) show that Black candidates (Pretos and Pardos) represent approximately 49.8% of the 2026 candidacies, an increase from 35.5% in 2022. However, significant disparities remain; while Black women make up 28.2% of the Brazilian population, they represent only about 18.2% of all candidacies.
Activists also raised concerns regarding the unequal distribution of campaign funds. Recent changes in legislation and TSE regulations have impacted the proportional allocation of resources to Black candidates, potentially hindering their ability to compete effectively despite increased representation in candidate lists.
