Ari Ruiz Reyes, a former district director for California Assemblymember Blanca Pacheco, has filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court alleging a hostile and abusive work environment. The lawsuit claims that Pacheco and her chief of staff, Nikki Johnson, retaliated against him after he reported concerns to the Legislature’s Workplace Conduct Unit.

Ruiz Reyes alleges that following a medical leave, he was subjected to a baseless theft investigation regarding a missing office camera. The suit further claims that Pacheco’s office stripped him of his job duties, excluded him from meetings, and abruptly terminated his employment in June.

In addition to the lawmaker and her chief of staff, Ruiz Reyes is suing the California State Assembly and its Rules Committee. A spokesperson for Pacheco stated that the office would respond through appropriate legal channels, while the Assembly Rules Committee disputed the allegations and expressed intent to defend against them.
