California Assembly workplace misconduct lawsuits

Overview

Former staff members of California Assemblymembers have filed separate lawsuits alleging various forms of workplace misconduct and retaliation.

Pa’tanisha Davis Pierson, a former district director for Anamarie Ávila Farías, filed a suit alleging racial discrimination and whistleblower retaliation. The complaint claims Davis Pierson faced repercussions after reporting campaign work being performed on state time. The lawsuit also alleges that the Assembly’s human resources department refused to accommodate medical leave and hybrid schedule requests. The Assembly’s Workplace Conduct Unit opened an investigation into these allegations in November.

In a separate legal action, Ari Ruiz Reyes, a former district director for Blanca Pacheco, filed a lawsuit alleging a hostile and abusive work environment. Ruiz Reyes claims that Pacheco and her chief of staff retaliated against him after he reported concerns to the Legislature’s Workplace Conduct Unit. The suit alleges that following a medical leave, Ruiz Reyes was subjected to a baseless theft investigation and was eventually terminated after being stripped of his duties.
