Bloodsport: After Helen of Troy premieres at Stratford East

The new play ‘Bloodsport: After Helen of Troy’, written by Ava Pickett and directed by Lisa Spirling, is currently performing at Stratford East. The production reimagines the aftermath of the Trojan War within a modern-day Essex setting.

The narrative follows Helen, portrayed by Michelle Dockery, who returns to her husband Marcus after fleeing with a foreigner named Paris. Her return triggers a violent anti-immigrant movement led by her husband’s ally, Mario. The play explores themes of misogyny, patriarchal control, and the consequences of past choices through the lens of a domestic disturbance that mirrors classical epic conflicts.

Performances include Michelle Dockery as Helen, Laura Aikman as Cee, and Gerard Monaco as Mario. The production has been noted for its use of Essex argot and its exploration of how historical myths can be translated into contemporary social and political tensions.
