Blue Nun German wine sees resurgence after 1980s popularity

Blue Nun, the best-selling German wine of all time, is experiencing a resurgence in popularity after being viewed as a ‘naff’ or embarrassing drink during its peak in the 1980s.

Created in 1921, the semi-sweet white wine is also known as Liebfraumilch. Originally made from the Müller-Thurgau grape, the brand's identity was shaped by a historical printing error that turned the color of the nuns on the label from black to blue. The term Liebfraumilch refers to ‘beloved lady’s milk’ from the monasteries of the Rhine Valley.

While the wine's style shifted over the decades from sweet to drier, Riesling-dominated profiles to match changing consumer palates, the brand remains iconic. The distinctive blue bottle was introduced during a relaunch in 1997.
