Blue Origin New Glenn explosion halts LC‑36A launch pad, raises US spaceport concerns

A static‑fire test of Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket on May 28 caused a large fireball that destroyed Launch Complex 36A at Cape Canaveral, marking the biggest rocket explosion in the Florida spaceport’s history. The loss eliminates the only launch pad dedicated to New Glenn and leaves the vehicle without a launch site, casting doubt on the company's timetable to return to flight before the end of the year. The incident also raises questions about the impact on NASA’s Artemis program, which depends on heavy‑lift launch capacity for upcoming lunar missions, and on commercial customers such as Amazon’s Project Leo and AST SpaceMobile that had planned to use New Glenn.

The explosion highlights broader strain on U.S. launch infrastructure. A NASA Office of Inspector General report in June warned that Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, and other sites could reach capacity limits by 2028 as launch cadence rises. Aging power systems, nitrogen pipelines, and other facilities are insufficient for simultaneous launches of New Glenn, United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan Centaur, and SpaceX’s Starship. Federal agencies are discussing potential funding and policy options, including billions of dollars in upgrades, but supplemental budget requests so far have excluded NASA, leaving the modernization of launch pads and supporting infrastructure uncertain.
