Blue Origin New Glenn rebuild, valve fix, NASA testing

Overview

Following the May 28, 2026, static-fire explosion that destroyed New Glenn and damaged Launch Complex 36A, the FAA cleared Blue Origin to resume flights after nine corrective actions. The company secured a $10 billion financing round and began pad reconstruction using a crane-lift integration concept, targeting a launch no later than late 2026.

Blue Origin’s investigation identified a failure of the main liquid-oxygen valve on one of the BE-4 engines as the root cause. Small design modifications to the valve are being fabricated and are expected to be installed by the end of August 2026. This fix is critical for New Glenn’s return to flight, which impacts Amazon’s Leo constellation, United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan schedule, and NASA’s Artemis program.

To support recovery, Blue Origin and NASA signed an agreement to use NASA’s historic B-2 test stand at the Stennis Space Center in Mississippi for hot-fire testing of New Glenn’s upper stage. This retrofit will accommodate the upper stage’s two BE-3 engines, with testing scheduled to begin in the fall. This marks the first time a private rocket’s upper stage will be tested at the Apollo-era facility.

Additionally, Blue Origin is expanding its Cape Canaveral site into a dual-pad facility. While rebuilding the damaged LC-36A to support the New Glenn 7x2 variant, the company is also breaking ground on an adjacent pad, LC-36B, designed for the larger New Glenn 9x4 rocket, which will feature nine BE-4 engines on its first stage and four BE-3U engines on its upper stage.
