Blue Origin awarded $700 million NASA contract for Mars communications network

NASA has selected Blue Origin to develop and operate the Mars Telecommunications Network (MTN), a critical infrastructure project designed to support current and future missions to the Red Planet. The firm-fixed-price contract has a maximum potential value of approximately $700 million.

Blue Origin is tasked with designing, building, launching, and operating a high-performance telecommunications orbiter. This spacecraft, built upon the Blue Ring platform, will provide high-bandwidth data relay, imagery transmission, and navigation services for robotic and human missions. The orbiter is expected to be delivered to NASA by December 31, 2028, with the network becoming fully operational by 2030.

The project addresses an urgent need to modernize Mars communications. The current relay infrastructure relies on aging scientific satellites, such as Mars Odyssey and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which were not primarily designed for dedicated telecommunications. As NASA prepares for human exploration in the coming decades, the MTN will serve as a vital backbone for reliable, high-speed connectivity between Earth and Mars-based assets.
