NASA has awarded Blue Origin a firm-fixed-price contract, valued at a maximum of approximately $700 million, to develop and operate the Mars Telecommunications Network (MTN). The project involves designing, building, launching, and operating a high-performance telecommunications orbiter based on the Blue Ring platform.

The new infrastructure is intended to provide high-bandwidth data relay, imagery transmission, and navigation services for both robotic and human missions. This modernization effort follows the loss of contact with the Maven mission, which previously managed approximately 18% of all data transmitted from the Martian surface to Earth.

Blue Origin is expected to deliver the orbiter to NASA by December 31, 2028, with the network becoming fully operational by 2030. The MTN will serve as a vital backbone for connectivity as NASA transitions from using aging scientific satellites to preparing for future human exploration of Mars.

Production for the project is reportedly underway at Blue Origin’s facility in Huntsville, Alabama. The initiative aims to ensure reliable connectivity for surface assets, such as rovers, by providing a dedicated system that does not have to split resources between scientific investigation and communication duties.
