Bluefin tuna: Rapid ocean predator with massive growth potential

The bluefin tuna is a highly efficient marine predator capable of swimming at speeds exceeding 70 km/h. While these fish can grow to weigh hundreds of kilograms, they begin life at a size no larger than a ladybug.

At 10 years old, a bluefin tuna typically measures approximately 2 meters and weighs 170 kg, with some reaching 2.7 meters and 400 kg by age 20. The world record for the largest specimen was set in 1979, when a 679 kg tuna was captured off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada.

Bluefin tuna populations are distributed across the Atlantic, Pacific, and Antarctic oceans. In the Atlantic, Eastern stocks reproduce in the Mediterranean and migrate toward the United Kingdom and Norway, or south toward West Africa. Western Atlantic stocks reproduce in the Gulf of Mexico and migrate from Ecuador to Norway. Pacific populations inhabit northern waters, primarily from the coasts of Japan and China to the west coast of North America.
