Pacific bluefin tuna fishing quota management

Overview

An international management body has established a new framework for Pacific bluefin tuna catch quotas for the 2027 and 2028 fiscal years. The agreement includes a 25 percent increase in the annual quota for large fish weighing at least 30 kilograms in the Central and Western Pacific, raising the limit from 11,869 tons to 14,836 tons.

To aid conservation, the quota for smaller tuna weighing under 30 kilograms will be reduced by 6 percent to 4,823 tons. In the Eastern Pacific, the quota will see a slight expansion to 7,740 tons. The agreement follows bilateral discussions that resolved a previous impasse in Nagasaki involving objections from Mexico regarding a proposal led by Japan.

The new system will automatically calculate quotas based on resource availability and undergo review every two years. Final allocations for nations such as Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan remain subject to upcoming negotiations.
