BME launches portable training unit for underground mining

BME, a subsidiary of Omnia Holdings, has launched a Portable Training Unit designed to enhance safety and productivity in underground mining operations. The unit is a compact, towable physical replica of underground charging equipment that reproduces mechanical responses, vibrations, and tactile feedback encountered during live operations.

The platform aims to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practical application by allowing operators to develop muscle memory and situational awareness in a controlled environment. It enables crews to practice responding to equipment faults, emergency shutdowns, and communication failures without risking personnel, explosives, or production assets.

According to Derrick Menezes, BME’s Regional Manager for Underground Operations, the unit allows for training without interrupting active production or removing live equipment from service. Beyond operator training, the unit also provides engineering and maintenance teams with a way to practice troubleshooting and technical identification to reduce equipment downtime.
