BMKG issues high wave warnings for Maluku and Bengkulu waters

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued early warnings for high waves across several Indonesian maritime regions, effective from August 29 to September 1, 2026.

In the Maluku region, waves between 1.25 and 2.5 meters are expected across 20 water areas. Wind speeds in Maluku are generally moving from the east to southeast at 4 to 20 knots, with some areas potentially seeing speeds exceeding 20 knots. Affected zones include the waters around Buru Island, Seram Island, Ambon Island, the Kai Islands, the Aru Islands, the Banda Sea, and the Arafura Sea.

In Bengkulu, the warning is more severe for the Enggano Island waters and the Indian Ocean west of Bengkulu, where waves could reach heights of 2.5 to 4 meters. Other areas in Bengkulu may experience waves between 1.25 and 2.5 meters. Wind speeds in this region are expected to range from 2 to 25 knots. Authorities have advised fishermen and maritime operators to exercise caution, noting that small fishing boats face significant risks when wind speeds reach 15 knots and waves hit 1.25 meters.
