Overview

In mid‑July 2026, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued a wave warning for the Maluku archipelago and the southern Lombok Strait as Tropical Cyclone Haishen moved north of Papua. In early August 2026, BMKG extended warnings to the coasts of Bengkulu and South Kalimantan. In the Maluku region, waves of 1.25 to 2.5 meters were expected across 20 areas, including the waters around Buru, Seram, Ambon, the Kai and Aru Islands, the Banda Sea, and the Arafura Sea, driven by east to southeast winds. In Bengkulu, conditions were forecast to be more severe, with waves potentially reaching 2.5 to 4 meters in the Enggano Island waters and the western Indian Ocean. Authorities reiterated that small fishing boats face significant risks when wind speeds reach 15 knots and waves hit 1.25 meters.
