Indonesia faces extreme weather and El Nino risks through 2027
Indonesia is facing extreme weather conditions driven by a very strong El Nino phenomenon, which the BMKG predicts will persist until early 2027. The country is currently in the peak of its dry season, expected to last through September 2026, increasing the risks of water shortages, food production disruptions, and forest fires. In Central Java, drought has affected 30 of 35 regencies, prompting the distribution of over 36 million liters of clean water to residents.
To combat forest and land fires in Kalimantan, the Japanese government has deployed three CH-47 Chinook helicopters and 180 personnel to assist Indonesian authorities. Meanwhile, in North Kalimantan, 14 hotspots were recently detected in Bulungan. In other regions, such as Riau, advanced drones are being utilized by the police to detect and extinguish fires.
Regional weather forecasts indicate varied conditions: heavy rain is expected in Aceh and North Sumatra, while parts of Jakarta and Java remain mostly sunny. Maritime warnings have been issued for high waves reaching up to 4 meters in several Indonesian waters, posing risks to fishermen and shipping operators.
