Indonesia weather: BMKG warns of strong El Nino and reports varied regional conditions

Indonesia is facing diverse weather conditions and significant climate phenomena. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reports that Jakarta is expected to experience mostly sunny or partly cloudy weather on August 28, 2026. In Maluku, six regions are predicted to be sunny, while other areas may see cloudy conditions. Papua Barat Daya also expects a mix of sunny, partly cloudy, and cloudy weather across its regencies.

On a broader scale, BMKG has issued warnings regarding a very strong El Nino phenomenon, which is expected to peak in early September and October 2026. This condition, comparable to the 1998 event, poses risks of drought and forest fires, though local rainfall may still occur due to atmospheric dynamics. In response to these risks, DPR member Sudjatmiko has urged that BMKG's data be integrated into official policy to enhance transportation safety and disaster mitigation.

In regional infrastructure news, the Merah Putih Bridge in Klamana, Sorong, was officially inaugurated by Pangdam XVIII/Kasuari, providing improved transportation access for approximately 2,438 residents.
