BMKG warns of heavy rain and flood risk in multiple Indonesian regions

Indonesia's meteorological agency, BMKG, issued forecasts for widespread light rain on Friday across many cities, including Banda Aceh, Jambi, Palembang, Jakarta, Bandung and Surabaya, while highlighting thunderstorm potential in Medan, Tanjung Pinang and Palembang. The agency also warned of hazy conditions in Padang, fog in Kendari and smoke or haze in Mataram.

For Saturday, June 6, 2026, BMKG raised a heavy‑rain alert for large parts of the country, citing a cyclonic circulation in the northern Pacific near Papua that could generate intense rainfall from the Papua highlands to the Cenderawasih Bay and beyond. Areas placed on high‑alert include the Riau and Bangka‑Belitung islands, North Maluku and several western and eastern regions such as Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan and the Banda Sea. Residents were urged to stay alert for flooding and landslides, especially where drainage is poor or terrain is steep.
