Indonesia 2026 drought, fire & water aid response
Overview
By early September 2026, the El Niño-driven drought and its impacts on water security and air quality continued to escalate across Indonesia. Forest and land fires have exceeded 107,000 hectares, with Coordinating Minister Djamari Chaniago warning that conditions could mirror the 2015 crisis. In Central Java, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an ‘Awas’ (Extreme) status for 25 regencies and cities for the period of September 1–10, 2026, following at least 61 consecutive days without rain. Impacted areas include Cilacap, Brebes, Tegal, Banyumas, Purbalingga, Pekalongan, Banjarnegara, Kebumen, Wonosobo, Magelang, Purworejo, Klaten, Sukoharjo, Wonogiri, Karanganyar, Sragen, Grobogan, Blora, Rembong, Pati, Jepara, Kudus, and Demak. Additionally, Semarang, Surakarta, and Boyolali remain under ‘Siaga’ (Alert) status due to rainfall absences exceeding 31 days, threatening surface water sources like rivers and shallow wells.
As the dry season persists, the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has called on Muslims to perform Salat Istisqa, a prayer to request rain. While some regions like Sleman report stable water supplies through managed springs, areas such as Bimomartani, Tambakrejo, and Sendrejo are seeing decreases in supply.
Water security varies significantly by region. In Lamongan, approximately 35.9 million cubic meters of water remain in reservoirs to support irrigation for over 24,000 hectares of crops. Conversely, Bandar Lampung is facing a clean water crisis in at least five districts, including Sukabumi and Panjang. The BPBD estimates a daily requirement of 100,000 liters for affected residents, with experts citing mining and urban development as factors in the drying of residential wells.
