Indonesia 2026 drought, heat & water emergency
Entities: Semarang · Malang · Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika (BMKG) · Jakarta · Kepulauan Seribu
Overview
The drought that dominated much of Indonesia in late July continued into early August, with BMKG forecasts still showing a mix of clear skies, dense fog in high‑altitude districts and scattered rain across Sumatra, Java and the greater Jakarta area. Temperatures remained near 35 °C in Central Java, while river levels kept falling – the Cisadane in Tangerang dropped about 12 % and the Ciliwung in Depok fell to 30‑50 cm.
Relief operations expanded. The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) delivered another 20,000 L of clean water to 1,500 households in Cibeber, Cianjur, bringing the total distributed across six districts to 70,000 L, and continued the earlier 10,000‑L shipment to 48 families in Kendal. In Banten’s Gunung Batur village, residents reported severe spring depletion and appealed for aid as the El Niño‑driven drought persisted.
Fire response teams extinguished a forest and land fire near Sorong Timur, while investigations continue. BMKG issued a tropical cyclone warning for Cyclone Noul, forecasting heavy rain, strong winds and seas up to 2.5 m for the Riau Islands, northern Kalimantan and parts of North Sulawesi, and warned of thunderstorms and light rain for many major cities on 26 July.
A BRIN study linked Lake Toba’s long‑term water‑level decline to climate variability and intensified human activity, underscoring broader water‑security challenges beyond the immediate emergency.
