Indonesia weather shows variable patterns with heatwaves and localized rain

The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reports highly variable weather conditions across the archipelago for early September 2026. While much of the country remains in a dry season influenced by a strong El Nino phenomenon, atmospheric dynamics such as the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), Kelvin waves, and cyclonic circulation are triggering localized rainfall, thunderstorms, and potential strong winds in several regions.

Specific areas, including parts of Sumatra, Kalimantan, West Java, and Papua, face potential rain and wind. Conversely, several regions in Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi, and Papua are experiencing extreme heat, with temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius due to minimal cloud cover and the sun's position near the equator.

In Sampang, East Java, the dry season is expected to persist until December, leading to severe water shortages in both rural and urban areas. BMKG advises the public to remain vigilant regarding sudden weather changes, extreme heat, and potential flooding or wind hazards.
