BMW targets 2028 for series production of iX5 Hydrogen

BMW is accelerating the development of its first series-production hydrogen vehicle, the BMW iX5 Hydrogen, with a target for mass production by 2028. The company is currently in an intensive testing phase, validating the entire vehicle system, including the fuel cell, electric motor, high-voltage battery, and the Energy Master control unit.

Development is moving into a new phase of third-generation fuel cell prototype assembly in Munich. This process is designed to finalize testing methodologies and prepare for industrialization. Future mass production of these fuel cells is slated for the BMW Group plant in Steyr, where production equipment and testing stations are already being established.

The hydrogen technology aims to provide performance comparable to battery-electric models, with a target range of 750 km and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in under five seconds. Josef Hochreiter, head of hydrogen vehicles at BMW Group, emphasized the goal of creating a true BMW driving experience through a perfectly synchronized system.
