BMW launches fifth-gen X5 and expands US plant operations
Overview
BMW has expanded its vehicle portfolio and manufacturing capabilities, highlighted by the global launch of the fifth-generation X5 (G65). Following the $1.7bn expansion of its South Carolina facilities, BMW completed the integration of the Spartanburg and Woodruff plants. This allows Spartanburg to produce the X5 with five powertrain options: gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, the fully electric iX5, and a hydrogen-fuel-cell version slated for 2028.
The iX5 features a massive 141–144 kWh battery and 800V architecture, targeting ranges up to 845 km. Production of Gen6 high-voltage batteries is scheduled to begin at the Woodruff plant in December 2026. To meet global demand, BMW is also expanding its electric presence with the iX3, which has seen strong sales in Europe and China, and the i3 sedan, which saw early orders open ahead of schedule.
In the Chinese market, BMW introduced a China-exclusive long-wheelbase version of the X5 and iX5, featuring an extended 3,165 mm wheelbase and an 8K Theatre Screen. The company is also investing in regional growth, including an €800 million expansion in Mexico for Neue Klasse models. While facing challenges like an iX3 airbag recall in Switzerland, BMW's electrification strategy continues with high-performance models and advanced charging technologies, including 400kW fast-charging capabilities.
