BMW closes voluntary severance program early due to high demand

BMW has announced the early closure of its voluntary severance program after reaching its objectives ahead of schedule. The initiative, aimed at reducing the global workforce by approximately 8,000 positions by the end of 2027, saw significant interest, with an estimated 5,000 employees applying to leave. The high volume of interest reportedly caused temporary outages of the company’s internal portal when offers were first released.

The program primarily targets indirect employees in administration, management, and research and development, while excluding production staff. While individual payouts vary based on salary, age, and tenure, some reports indicate that certain high-level offers have exceeded €650,000. Employees were offered two primary departure windows: March 31, 2027, or October 31, 2027, with an additional “Turbo Bonus” available for those opting for the earlier date.

BMW expects to finalize the program by mid-November, at which point participants will be notified if their termination agreements are approved. The restructuring is part of a broader effort to reduce operational costs, with the company aiming for annual savings of approximately one billion euros starting in 2028.
