BMW corporate restructuring and job reduction program
Overview
BMW has prematurely closed its voluntary severance program in Germany after reaching its target earlier than expected. The program, which aims to reduce the global workforce by approximately 8,000 positions by the end of 2027, saw such high demand that the company’s internal HR4Me portal experienced system overloads following the release of personal offers in early October.
While the company has not disclosed the exact number of applicants, reports suggest approximately 5,000 employees expressed interest. The restructuring primarily targets indirect staff in administration, research, and development, while production personnel are expected to remain unaffected. Severance packages are highly individualized based on salary, age, and years of service, with some high-end offers for long-tenured, high-earning staff reportedly reaching up to €650,000.
Employees were presented with two primary departure windows: March 31, 2027, or October 31, 2027. Those opting for the earlier March date were eligible for an additional “Turbo Bonus”.
As the program moves toward its expected finalization by mid-November, new concerns have emerged in Munich. Local politicians have raised alarms regarding potential significant losses in trade tax revenue for the city between 2026 and 2029. These losses may stem from the massive severance payments being recorded as tax-deductible expenses during the restructuring process.
Ultimately, the restructuring is intended to generate annual savings of approximately one billion euros starting in 2028 and to increase organizational agility as the company shifts toward artificial intelligence and the rollout of the Neue Klasse models.
