BMW completes $1.7 bn investment in South Carolina plants

BMW Group has finished a US$1.7 bn investment program in South Carolina, expanding its existing Plant Spartanburg and building a new Plant Woodruff dedicated to battery assembly. The milestone was marked by a “Home of X” event that launched the fifth‑generation BMW X5, while the iX5 was announced as the first fully electric BMW to be produced in the United States, with production slated to begin in late‑2026. Plant Spartanburg will become the first BMW facility worldwide capable of assembling a single model with five different drivetrain technologies on one line, and the company aims to produce at least six fully electric models in the U.S. by 2030, with high‑voltage batteries supplied locally from Woodruff. Chairman Milan Nedeljković said the completion demonstrates BMW’s confidence in the United States and reinforces South Carolina’s central role in the group’s global operations.
