BMW declines Formula 1 interest due to limited technology transfer

BMW has declined interest in joining Formula 1, citing a lack of meaningful technology transfer to its production vehicles. Frank van Meel, head of BMW M, described the sport as being “too much of a laboratory,” noting that the technology developed in F1 is too disconnected from the cars sold to consumers to justify the investment.

Unlike competitors such as Mercedes, Audi, and upcoming entrants like Cadillac and Ford, BMW prefers motorsport disciplines with a more direct link to road cars. The company is currently focusing its racing efforts on the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and IMSA. BMW notes that elements from its M4 GT3 and LMDh race cars are directly influencing the design and powertrain of its Neue Klasse and hybrid production models, such as the M5 and XM.
