BMW M motorsport strategy and Formula 1 stance
Overview
BMW M has expressed a lack of interest in returning to Formula 1, despite the sport’s increasing popularity and the entry of other manufacturers like Audi, Cadillac, and Ford. Franciscus van Meel, Managing Director of BMW M, characterized Formula 1 as being “too much of a laboratory” and argued that the technology developed there is not sufficiently transferable to production vehicles.
Instead, the company is prioritizing participation in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the IMSA SportsCar Championship. BMW M views these series as more aligned with its philosophy of bringing motorsport technology directly to consumer cars. The company noted that elements from its M4 GT3 and LMDh race cars are directly influencing the design and powertrain of upcoming hybrid production models, such as the M5, XM, and the Neue Klasse series.
