BMW i3 production starts in Munich and Monaco under Neue Klasse

BMW has begun series production of the all‑electric i3 at its historic Munich plant, marking the first mass‑produced vehicle of the Neue Klasse platform in Germany. The launch follows a four‑year plant overhaul that reduced manufacturing costs by about 10 % and prepares the site to build only electric models from 2027.

At the same time, the newly refurbished Monaco factory has also started i3 production, achieving a further 10 % cost cut through tighter supplier integration and digitalised assembly lines. Both sites are being readied to become dedicated electric‑vehicle hubs, with additional Neue Klasse models slated for later rollout.

The BMW Group Werk Steyr in Austria is ramping up e‑motor output for the i3 and iX3, delivering more than 4,000 units per week and targeting over 100,000 motors in 2026. A high‑performance i3 M prototype, equipped with four electric motors and roughly 700 bhp, was spotted testing at the Nürburgring and is slated for series production in early 2027.
