BMW offers severance packages exceeding 650,000 euros

BMW has launched a global cost-reduction program aiming to eliminate approximately 8,000 jobs by the end of 2027. As part of this initiative, the company is offering voluntary severance packages to employees, with some individual offers reportedly exceeding 650,000 euros.

The high level of interest in the program caused BMW's internal employee portal to crash due to heavy traffic, leading the company to temporarily suspend the application process to manage the influx of requests. In Germany, the program primarily targets around 40,000 employees in administration, management, research, and development, while production staff are not included.

The severance amounts are highly variable, determined by factors such as salary, age, and years of service. While the company expects the program to cost hundreds of millions of euros in the short term, management anticipates annual savings of approximately one billion euros starting in 2028. This restructuring coincides with BMW's transition toward new technologies, such as the Neue Klasse generation and increased use of artificial intelligence.
