BMW unveils new X5 generation with electric, hybrid and hydrogen options

BMW announced the fifth‑generation X5, slated for launch in 2026, built on its new CLAR platform and the Neue Klasse electric architecture. The model will be offered with five power‑train variants: conventional gasoline and diesel engines, mild‑ and plug‑in hybrid systems, a fully electric iX5 and a hydrogen fuel‑cell iX5 planned for 2028.

The iX5 electric version is expected to house a 147.8 kWh gross (≈141–142 kWh usable) battery, delivering up to about 1,000 km WLTP range, 424 kW (577 hp) power and 800 Nm torque. The hydrogen variant will carry 7 kg of hydrogen, provide up to 750 km WLTP range, and refuel in under five minutes; it will be the first all‑wheel‑drive fuel‑cell SUV and is being co‑developed with Toyota.

Production will remain at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in the United States. The new X5 features a refreshed exterior, a digital interior with a 14.5‑inch central display, a 17.9‑inch driver screen, and optional high‑fidelity audio. BMW positions hydrogen as a complementary storage solution for surplus renewable electricity, citing its potential to enable a greener energy ecosystem.
