BMW launches fifth‑generation X5 SUV

BMW unveiled the fifth generation of its X5 SUV, slated for market launch at the end of 2026 with a base price from €94,800. The model adopts the Neue Klasse design language, featuring a slimmer kidney grille, X‑shaped daytime‑running lights and a redesigned cockpit dominated by a large curved screen, a vertical steering wheel and an optional passenger‑side display. Mechanical changes include the removal of the split rear door in favour of a single, wider opening to simplify loading.

The new X5 is offered with five power‑train options: a 400 PS six‑cylinder mild‑hybrid, a 286 PS diesel, two plug‑in hybrids (up to 612 PS) and a fully electric version (iX5) delivering up to 578 PS and a WLTP range of up to 845 km. A hydrogen‑fuel‑cell model is planned for series production from 2028. Performance figures for the flagship 40 i mild‑hybrid include 0‑100 km/h in 5.3 s and a top speed of 250 km/h. The SUV retains a spacious interior with a 3.04 m wheelbase, a cargo volume of 655–1,850 L and optional air‑suspension, rear‑axle steering and wheel‑by‑wheel torque vectoring.

In China, the X5 had to be adapted to local safety rules: electronic hidden door handles were replaced with conventional protruding knobs and the X‑shaped light signature was toned down to avoid culturally negative connotations. Prototypes were also test‑driven around BMW’s plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, confirming the vehicle’s handling on varied road conditions.
