BMW launches new X5 SUV with innovative winglet door handle and rear‑wheel‑drive option
BMW has unveiled the fifth‑generation X5 (G65) SUV, marking a global launch in June 2026 with production slated to start at the Spartanburg plant in the United States in August 2026 and first deliveries expected by late 2026 for the xDrive model and early 2027 for additional variants. The redesign introduces a sleek wing‑style door handle that is integrated into the door frame and operates via a touch sensor, with a mechanical backup that can be pulled manually if the electronic system fails.
The new X5 offers a broad powertrain portfolio: gasoline and diesel 3.0‑liter inline‑six engines, two plug‑in hybrid versions, the first fully electric X5 (iX5 60) delivering up to 578 hp and a range of up to 845 km, and a future hydrogen‑fuel‑cell model. The rear‑wheel‑drive X5 40, available in the U.S., retains the 3.0‑liter turbocharged engine with 394 hp, matches the all‑wheel‑drive version’s 0‑60 mph time of 5.1 seconds, and starts at $71,250. All versions feature the new “Panoramic iDrive” infotainment system, advanced lighting, and expanded cargo capacity.
